WIRE-Net:
Where Manufacturing Matters.

Minimizing
Our Environmental Footprint
and Much More
As
with most businesses, WIRE-Net looks for opportunities to utilize
local resources, reduce office supply costs, and minimize
environmental impact. An analysis of our office supply spending,
determined that switching to refillable pens was one area WIRE-Net
could reduce consumption and spending. The first challenge was
coming up with a local supplier, and it proved to be quite a problem
to find pens manufactured in the United States.
WIRE-Net's
Office Manager, Sharon Steinbrenner, quickly identified a local
company that provides internal parts for pens and a variety of raw
woods and plastics that can, with the use of a lathe, be made into
ballpoint pens and other small items. Since we don't keep lathes in
the office, she came up with a creative solution that involved the
youth in our School-to-Career program at Max Hayes High School.
Sharon
described the project to Max Hayes' Dave Mikita, T.E.A.M. Academy
Project Manager, who was intrigued by this opportunity to get his
students more practical experience. Dave, Sharon, and Colleen
Kushlak, one of WIRE-Net's School-to-Career Coordinators, visited
Berea Hardwoods to investigate the possibilities.
Dave
decided this was a viable and worthwhile project. He purchased
pieces to do some sample work. When that went well, he brought
students in and let them try their hands at producing samples. Dave
reports the students loved making the pens. WIRE-Net purchased 100
pen kits, which the students should have finished in the next few
days.
The
first batch was finished in time for the Board of Director's retreat
in March, where each Board member received a pen in a custom-made
tray that noted the type of wood used for the pen and the name of
the student who created it.
A lathe was purchased just for the purpose of keeping this project
going at Max Hayes and possibly using it for a fundraiser in the
future. For more information about the project, contact Sharon
Steinbrenner at 216.588.1440, ext 100

What's
Driving Cleveland?
Manufacturing: Myths vs. Realities
Here
are some facts we bet you already knew:
FACT:
Manufacturing is still Northeast Ohio's largest economic provider,
contributing $36 billion to our economy between 2005 and 2007.
FACT:
Manufacturing provided more jobs than any other sector in Northeast
Ohio during the past three years.
The
headlines aren't always positive, but what's behind the headlines?
Manufacturing is still the leading economic driver in Northeast
Ohio. Contrary to some opinions, we still make and sell many
manufactured goods and components. So, what challenges do our
manufacturing companies face in today's economy? How are they
adapting? How does Northeast Ohio compare to other markets, and how
are we responding. Find out on May 19!
John
Colm, WIRE-Net President and Executive Director, will be part of
a panel that includes Jeff Korach, Dan Moore, Larry Moretti, Tracey
Nichols, and David O'Halloran.
Keynote
speakers are U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and Tom Waltermire,
Chief Executive Officer of Team Northeast Ohio.
