IS
MAGICC-NEO for you?
Manufacturing Access to Growth & Innovation in Cuyahoga County
and Northeast Ohio
MAGICC-NEO
is an innovative collaboration of industry, education, and workforce
partners working to help companies in the metals industry find new
workers and improve the skills of their existing workers.
The
MAGICC-NEO partners work with companies that face hiring and
training needs in occupations including precision machining (CNC
& manual), welding, and industrial maintenance (facilities,
electrical, automation and equipment). The training will be provided
both through Cuyahoga Community College and Tooling University so
companies can develop a customized plan with an approach that
includes online AND hands-on learning.
WIRE-Net
has worked with half-a-dozen firms that are lining up for
MAGICC-NEO's training resources, and are planning to/are using
MAGICC-NEO to support their need for customized training. Plans
include training to operate sophisticated CNC grinders and manual
horizontal boring machines as well as training to maintain the
equipment used to manufacture components for wind turbines.
Bula
Forge & Machine, Inc. is a local company taking advantage of
MAGICC-NEO, "The MAGICC program was a great fit,"
commented Jane Szostakowski, HR Manager at Bula, "We could use
Tooling University, which we had been using already, and also get
customized training delivered by Cuyahoga Community College right
here at our plant." Currently, 11 Bula employees are receiving
CNC training, customized by Tri-C and delivered at the company's
Westside operation, and two employees are being trained at Tri-C in
Industrial Electric and Welding.
MAGICC-NEO
is a 3-year initiative, managed by The Cobalt Group, in
collaboration with the City of Cleveland/Cuyahoga County Workforce
Investment Board, Employment Connection, Cuyahoga Community College,
Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Max S. Hayes Career &
Technical High School, Tooling University, MAGNET, and WIRE-Net
This
project is funded by a grant awarded under the Community Based Job
Training Grants, as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor's
Employment and Training Administration.

What's
Driving Cleveland?
Manufacturing:
Myths vs. Realities
Here
are some facts we bet you already knew:
FACT:
Manufacturing is still Northeast Ohio's largest economic provider,
contributing $36 billion to our economy between 2005 and 2007.
FACT:
Manufacturing provided more jobs than any other sector in Northeast
Ohio during the past three years.
The
headlines aren't always positive, but what's behind the headlines?
Manufacturing is still the leading economic driver in Northeast
Ohio. Contrary to some opinions, we still make and sell many
manufactured goods and components. So, what challenges do our
manufacturing companies face in today's economy? How are they
adapting? How does Northeast Ohio compare to other markets, and how
are we responding. Find out on May 19!
John
Colm, WIRE-Net President and Executive Director, will be part of a
panel that includes Jeff Korach, Dan Moore, Larry Moretti, Tracey

Lean
Tour Series Heads to Deluxe Corporation
WIRE-Net
is once again teaming up with WINOC: Work in Northeast Ohio Council
to bring you the opportunity to see how another successful company
is implementing Lean principles. Join us on Thursday, May 22, 2008
from 7:30 to 10:00 AM at Deluxe Corporation, 10030 Philipp Parkway,
Streetsboro, OH 44241
Deluxe
Corporation in Streetsboro began its Lean journey in 2000. The
facility made significant operational improvements, including the
introduction of cellular work teams into many of the product areas.
During a period of time from 2003 - 2006 several acquisitions were
made that delayed the Lean transformation.
Beginning
in 2006 with a new CEO, Deluxe Corporation and the Streetsboro
facility resumed the Lean journey in earnest with a focused emphasis
on education and a more streamlined approach to implementation. They
have gone back to basics with 5S+1, waste reduction, employee Lean
communications and the development of Lean Champions. In addition,
they have also added a Steering Committee, reviewed current cells
for improvement, and set a roadmap for the future.
The
results have been impressive. In 2000, the Streetsboro plant shipped
7,000 orders per day and employed 275 employees. As a result of Lean
implementation:
Kevin
Buck, Deluxe Streetsboro Site Leader and his team will describe the
current state and future plans of the facility as well as lead a
tour.
There
is no charge for this event, but attendance will be limited, so
contact us early to register. Note: this tour is currently full, but
to add your name to the waiting list, you can register online.

more information, contact Dee Holody at 216.588.1440, ext 126.
Talan
Products Wins National Award
Longtime
WIRE-Net member company, Talan Products, Inc. was named last week to
the 2008 Inner City 100 list, a national ranking of the fastest
growing inner-city companies from the Initiative for a Competitive
Inner City (ICIC) and Inc. Magazine.
Of the
100 winners, only one was from Cleveland, only three were from Ohio,
only 10 were manufacturers, and only one other was in the metals
arena.
Talan,
a manufacturer of high volume metal stampings, becomes the only
Cleveland company to make the list in the past three years - but it
is not the first time Talan has made the list. Talan was also chosen
in 1998, the first year of ICIC rankings. The ICIC is a national
not-for-profit organization founded in 1994 by Harvard Business
School professor Michael E. Porter whose mission is to promote
economic prosperity in America's inner cities through private sector
engagement that leads to jobs, income and wealth creation for local
residents
This
year, over 6500 nominations were received nationwide. It was Talan's
growth rate of 156% over the past five years that propelled it into
the top rankings. "We were thrilled to win again," said
Steve Peplin, Talan CEO, who attended the two-day event in Boston.
"We consider it a big deal. And it's a great 'Good News' story
for Cleveland."
Talan
has also in the past made the national Inc. 500 List, and been named
a Weatherhead 100 winner 8 times, from Case Western Reserve
University.
Congratulations
to everyone at Talan Products, Inc.
