This year's keynote address Sustainability: A 21st Century American Grand Strategy, will be presented by retired Marine Colonel Mark "Puck" Mykleby, co-author of the book The New Grand Strategy: Restoring Prosperity, Security, and Sustainability in the 21st Century, and co-founder of the Long Haul Capital Group. His book offers an in-depth approach to U.S. grand strategy that takes the best of progressive and conservative ideas and illustrates how business can lead the country into a new strategic era focused on driving sustainable prosperity and security.

One of the key insights found in The New Grand Strategy is that oil and gas are key to solving the challenge of climate change. However, the solution lies in using oil and gas hydrocarbons to produce advanced polymeric materials to reduce the embodied energy of the planet's material palette. For Northeast Ohio, the nation's #1 producer of polymer products and components, this is a massive strategic opportunity.

Puck Mykleby

Mark was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps following his graduation from the United States Naval Academy in 1987. From January 1991 to May 2006, he served in five fleet fighter squadrons and performed numerous operational squadron billets to include Commanding Officer. He earned a Masters of Military Studies from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in 1999.

In May 2007, he graduated from the Air War College with distinction and earned a Masters of Strategic Studies. Mark was assigned to the U.S. Special Operations Command where he developed strategy for Special Operations Forces. From July 2009 until April 2011, he served as a special strategic assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In that capacity, he co-authored with Navy Captain Wayne Porter A National Strategic Narrative, a concept and vision for a 21st Century grand strategy for the nation.

Mark retired from the Marine Corps in August 2011 and subsequently joined New America Foundation, serving as a senior fellow from August 2011 to August 2014. From September 2014 to January 2017, Mark was the co-founder and Co-Director of Case Western Reserve University's Strategic Innovation Lab where he continued his work on grand strategy and sustainability. While at Case Western, he co-authored, along with Patrick Doherty and Joel Makower, The New Grand Strategy: Restoring America's Prosperity, Security and Sustainability in the 21st Century, which lays out a business plan for America, born at the Pentagon, that embeds sustainability as a national strategic imperative.

Mark Mykleby is currently the Co-Founder of Long Haul Capital Group, LLC; a company dedicated to creating sustainable, walkable, and healthy communities.

A Unique Auction to Benefit Our Youth Programs

WIRE-Net and the Friends of Max Hayes collaborate closely to build rigorous work-based learning experiences for both teachers and students at Max S. Hayes Career and Technical High School. Our programs ensure that students get exposure to a range of career opportunities in machining, welding, computer aided design, robotics, and other fields.

For every $100 raised, we can sponsor one student's job shadowing experience. For every $275 raised, we can send 10 students on a manufacturing plant tour, for every $540 raised we can place a Technical Corps member in a career tech classroom to support the students and teachers, and for every $1000 raised, we can place a student in a paid 100-hour internship with a local company.
