GLWN
A Global Wind Network

The wind industry presents an outstanding opportunity to re-invigorate and revitalize a segment of the region’s manufacturing infrastructure.  Wind power is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States.  The tall towers across the landscape represented to WIRE-Net thousands, yes millions, of machined, casted, forged and fabricated parts like gears and bearings.  There are over 8,000 components found in today’s wind turbine.

WIRE-Net formed the Great Lakes WIND Network (now known as GLWN) as an industry-based organization of manufacturers, suppliers and research organizations.  Its mission is to serve this market by growing the supply chain.  The Network

  • links industry OEMs with component suppliers
  • joins with public and private partners to generate new investment
  • supports public policy initiatives which are key to expanding the wind industry

Mission ReminderA core tenet of our mission is to fuel economic growth.  The GLWN Initiative is an effective means by which the region can become a leader in the supply chain for the burgeoning wind industry.  WIRE-Net and its wind initiative, GLWN, are connecting suppliers to buyers to strengthen our communities.

WIRE-Net recognized that wind is the fastest growing industry in North America. We understood that this growth presented opportunities for our manufacturing-rich region by

  • Filling the gap in the supply chain with domestic suppliers
  • Introducing area component manufacturers to a new market

In response, we created GLWN.

This initiative is funded in part by grants from The Kent H. Smith Charitable Trust, The Cleveland Foundation, the City of Cleveland Department of Economic Development, and The Burton D. Morgan Foundation.
