The rubber may meet the road in Akron, but the founders of Summers Rubber left the comforts of Goodyear to establish their own company in 1949 with the dream of controlling their own destiny. They felt there was an underserved market in Cleveland, and what a market it has become.

Founded by W.H. Summers and William M. Summers, the three-generation family company has grown to be a leader in the regional market for industrial hose products by combining in-depth product knowledge with problem-solving ability. Providing hose solutions that convey everything from acid to ice cream, Summers Rubber learned early on it was the relationships and associations they founded that helped them grow. One of the associations they helped establish was NAHAD (National Association of Hose and Accessory Distributors). In addition to associations, the company has been actively participating in the oil and gas market in Ohio, Western PA and WV, as hose products and accessories are an integral part of gas drilling and processing.

Summers Rubber is also a founding member of WIRE-Net, which benefited greatly from the leadership of Mike Summers as a board member and president of the board. "I remember very vividly working on the original Pew Charitable Trust grant which was a transformational moment for WIRE-Net. We attended the national conference of the Pew grant recipients and found that all the other recipients were trying to determine how to reach employers...WIRE-Net represented employers," commented Mike Summers.

A current and ongoing challenge that Summers Rubber faces is attracting, training and retaining quality employees. WIRE-Net's T.J. McGowan, Manager of Employment Services, works closely with the company to identify candidates for open positions at Summers Rubber. Another valuable WIRE-Net resource the company has utilized is the HR roundtable where they have benefited from recruiting ideas from fellow members. Additionally, Summers has used WIRE-Net as a resource on training grants such as the Incumbent Workforce Training Program through the State of Ohio.

Today, the ISO Certified company continues to lead the way as all Summers' employees undergo extensive training. Many of the Summers Rubber sales personnel and fabricators are NAHAD certified and provide in-depth knowledge about products that deliver improved performance, greater durability and significant cost-savings.

In 2010 Mike Summers became the Mayor of Lakewood, OH taking him out of the day to day operations of the company. In December 2012 Summers Rubber was acquired by Singer Equities, a group of value added distributors in the industrial rubber products industry.

Under the leadership of VP/General Manager Frank Tiernay and his management team, Summers Rubber continues to be a major player in our regional economy.
