Manufacturers Report Tough Times
in Recent Economic Survey

WIRE-Net's Quarterly Manufacturing Outlook survey shows tough times are still ahead for manufacturers in America's heartland as 60% report poor sales as their greatest concern.

Recent results of WIRE-Net's second quarter economic survey of its members give startling indications of the increasing impact this recession is having on manufacturers. Since the end of the fourth quarter last year, when WIRE-Net first began surveying its membership about their economic status and forecast,

  • Hiring: 65% have put off plans to replace or add new jobs within the next six months, up from 40% at the end of 2008. 72% have cut jobs and/or hours at their plants.
  • Capital Investment: 52% of companies surveyed have put planned capital expenditures on hold, up nearly 25%.
  • Short Term Credit and Financing: nearly 20% of companies report that they are now having trouble accessing short term financing due to current market conditions. At the end of last year, less than 10% reported having such issues getting access to short term financing.

According to John Colm, WIRE-Net's President and Executive Director, "Today 68% of our manufacturing leaders report poor sales are their number one concern where at the end of 2008, 25% were equally concerned about poor sales and with the shortage of skilled labor. Without a doubt, the quickest way for us to get out of this mess is to help manufacturers discover avenues to generate new business."

Just in Times BannerWIRE-Net surveyed 1030 executives and got responses from 213 manufacturing firms in their membership that includes manufacturing firms across greater Cleveland, and, through WIRE-Net's Great Lakes WIND Network, the Great Lakes region. Colm stated, "Not surprisingly, many companies in this region are closely tied to automotive and other metals and durable goods markets particularly hard hit by this recession. WIRE-Net launched Great Lakes WIND Network to help manufacturers establish a foothold in an industry with legs. This is part of our new markets strategy. Great Lakes WIND Network is a supply chain network that educates manufacturers about the wind industry and what they need to do to be competitive in the business. For those that are interested and able to meet the requirements, we then serve as matchmakers by connecting buyers and sellers. This is a practical way to help companies identify, qualify, and position themselves to generate new sales in a new market."

Reduce Costs NOW! 5S Leads the Way

Learn the why and how to start up a 5S policy in your company. 5S is used to increase profits and support increased sales by reducing waste (including time and materials) while reducing mistakes. 5S is:

  • The starting point of your Lean initiative
  • An integrated tool in your Lean or Six Sigma or ISO Continuous Improvement initiative
  • A tool used alone to develop a discipline that will bring improvements to product flow, inventory control and quality

Learn, discuss, and explore this systematic method for developing standard procedures and common understanding, removing time-consuming constraints and empowering your people to act more fully in their work.

This 5S Roundtable will be lead by Rick Bohan and Jim Gray. Both of these local experts have many years implementing and managing Lean initiatives from the shop floor and come with a wealth of practical experience. Begin your 5S and Lean learning or refresh what you know and network with other Lean practitioners by attending this short and informative session. Join us on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from 8:00 to 9:30 AM (doors open at 7:30) at WIRE-Net, 4855 W. 130th Street, Suite 1, Cleveland, OH 44135. ISO Internal Audit Training for All Companies

There is only one reason to gain ISO compliance: because it is a requirement to retain or grow sales revenues. WIRE-Net can help you decide between compliance and registration. Either process provides opportunities to fix gaps and refine business processes in your company. Stronger teams, fact-based decision-making, and the requirement to continuously improve are among common side benefits.

WIRE-Net is conducting ISO Internal Audit Training open to all companies. If you have a small staff or are interested in bringing a few of your people up to speed do conduct internal audits, this program is for you. We will be conducting the program during one week in September and will comprise three, half-day, morning sessions (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) at a company in the Cleveland area. The three days will cover the following:

Half day 1: Groups will explore and learn how to use the 9001:2000 ISO Standard

Half day 2: Learn all about being an Auditor and auditing, includes workbook and PowerPoint presentation

Half day 3: Practical experience with small-scope audits to build Auditor confidence plus your first real audits that count for ISO compliance.

Are you interested in hosting this event? Let us know. As a benefit to the hosting company, participants will audit your processes. What they produce ... you keep! For more information on this program, contact Mark Pinto at 216.588.1440 ext. 103.
