John Colm and Pete Accorti were part of a team charged with developing a plan to engage business leaders in the advanced manufacturing and materials sectors to resolve sustainability challenges and maximize new business opportunities. This team included people from the Dan T. Moore Company, E4S, Herschman Architects, Masco Corporation, Nordson Corporation, and an industrial controls start-up company. “A key area of focus that will be important going forward is providing market intelligence and market-entry advice to Northeast Ohio and Cleveland companies in growing green markets. This reinforces the conclusion of WIRE-Net's Manufacturing Summit related to New Markets, something we will be developing in the months ahead,” stated Colm. “Our team is looking at ways to build on WIRE-Net’s experience in the wind industry while also identifying additional new green market opportunities.” We will bring you more information about their work in the coming months.
Following its successful showing at the American Wind Energy Association's annual WINDPOWER Conference, WIRE-Net's Great Lakes WIND Network (GLWN) is heading north to exhibit in CanWEA, the Canadian Wind Energy Association's annual Conference and Exhibition. This year, more than 2,000 delegates and 225 exhibitors will come together in Toronto from September 20 through 23, 2009. Session topics will range from opportunities in the Canadian wind energy supply chain, transmission challenges, wind project economics, small wind energy, and much more. This event, which has already sold out, provides to a good chance for manufacturers to meet OEMs and learn more about supply chain possibilities. In many ways, it is like WINDPOWER only smaller and more intimate. If you are planning on attending, please stop by GLWN's booth - number 448. We hope to see you there.

There is only one reason to gain ISO compliance: because it is a requirement to retain or grow sales revenues. WIRE-Net can help you decide between compliance and registration. Either process provides opportunities to fix gaps and refine business processes in your company. Stronger teams, fact-based decision-making, and the requirement to continuously improve are among common side benefits. WIRE-Net is conducting ISO Internal Audit Training open to all companies. If you have a small staff or are interested in bringing a few of your people up to speed do conduct internal audits, this program is for you. We will be conducting the program during one week at the end of September that will comprise three, half-day, morning sessions (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) at a company in the Cleveland area. The three days will cover the following: Half day 1: Groups will explore and learn how to use the 9001:2008 ISO Standard Half day 2: Learn all about being an Auditor and auditing, includes workbook and PowerPoint presentation Half day 3: Practical experience with small-scope audits to build Auditor confidence plus your first real audits that count for ISO compliance. Are you interested in hosting this event? Let us know. As a benefit to the hosting company, participants will audit your processes. What they produce . . . you keep! For more information on this program, contact Mark Pinto at 216.588.1440 ext. 103.
WIRE-Net is currently working with a new member who is interested in expanding their place on the supply chain. In other words, creating more capabilities to deliver and meet an underserved part of their market. In discussions with their team, I discovered that the initiative would require building out space and purchasing equipment as well as training and developing people to fill the operator role - a heavy investment. After some additional discussion, we uncovered the possibility of creating an alliance with a local company with the capability needed to meet the indentified market opportunity. The advantages to this approach could include: Lower start up costs
Quicker start up
Shared risk Not to mention filling excess capacity in our region and increasing our region's productivity. We are currently running industry lists and identifying companies with whom we have relationships, in order to identify a short list of potential candidates for them to visit. If you are thinking of a new idea or entering new market, give us a call. We are helping companies find ways to diversify their customer base through approaches like the one just outlined and other ways of moving companies into better productivity. For more information contact Mark Pinto at 216.588.1440 ext. 103.
