2010 Manufacturing Innovation Celebration Is a Hit!

WIRE-Net's Innovation Celebration

Attendees of WIRE-Net's 2010 Innovation Celebration were able to connect with each other and the 40 sponsors and exhibitors.

"General networking opportunities and the chance to see how other businesses are fairing was a plus."

"I enjoyed the ability to network with new and old faces and companies."

"I really liked the mix of the companies and the amount so I had a real chance to stop at every booth and spend a little time."

—Good things people had to say about WIRE-Net's 2010 Innovation Celebration

On June 23rd, Northeast Ohio’s manufacturing community celebrated the spirit that has kept industry strong in Ohio at WIRE-Net’s 2010 Manufacturing Innovation Celebration. Sponsors, exhibitors, and attendees had the chance to connect with others in the community to sell or buy locally: parts, products, or services.

The New Max Hayes
Creating a National Model for Career Tech Learning

Max Hayes High School is the only school in the Cleveland public school system that teaches the technical skills of manufacturing technology, construction, and automotive technology and auto-body. Since 1992, WIRE-Net has been an active partner at the Max S. Hayes Career and Technical High School, linking industry experts and experiences to students and teachers.

WIRE-Net's New Max Hayes Award

The New Max Hayes Award, produced by the Cleveland Steel Tool Company, celebrates the Technical Team's spirit of Innovation and Collaboration.

Several years ago, with the strong support of WIRE-Net and local business and industry partners, including local metalworking associations and the Greater Cleveland Partnership, the TEAM Academy was formed at Max Hayes as a pilot "school within a school" to model the academy approach to education. This introduced closer integration of academic and technical education, strengthened the influence of industry at the school, and also led to the addition of Oracle programming to the technical instruction available. All along, WIRE-Net's role has been to leverage our relationships with hundreds of Cleveland firms to help students get prepared for real work and real rewards.

What Makes WIRE-Net's School-to-Career Program Successful?

A 95% or better grade promotion or graduation rate is just part of what sets WIRE-Net's youth Manufacturing Career Exploration and Career Readiness program apart from other programs. Wire-Net's high school youth program, School-to-Career, ended the year with a 90% retention rate and over a 75% participation rate in all after-school experiential learning activities. Four out of six graduates have decided to pursue secondary education and have been accepted to Cleveland State University, Toledo University, Baldwin Wallace College, and Cuyahoga Community College.

WIRE-Net Kicks-Off Fifth Year of AIM Camp
Introducing Students to Manufacturing Careers

AIM Plant Tour

On Monday June 14th, 50 8th-grade students from Cleveland schools launched a three-week adventure into the world of advanced manufacturing at Max Hayes High School. WIRE-Net kicked off its 5th year of Accelerated Introduction to Manufacturing (AIM) Camp. The camp runs Mondays through Thursday, June 14th to July 1.

"We had another year where applications far exceeded the available camp slots," reported, Jessica Walker, WIRE-Net Workforce Program Coordinator, "so we added an interview component which gave students the opportunity to experience the interview process, and helped determine the right student matches for the camp." Students had to demonstrate strong math skills by submitting a recommendation from their math teacher and proof of a minimum of 90% attendance during the school year.

Students will use the basic tools of the trades including calipers and micrometers, and experience CNC machining technology. Camp time will be spent in the computer labs using SolidWorks® design software and in the machine shop where they will complete a project to fabricate a model car from scratch. Camp will also include important life skills training, plus plant tours of Astro Manufacturing & Design Inc. and Lincoln Electric's Automation Division.

This program is made possible with the generous support of U.S. Department of Labor MAGICC grant to the Cleveland/Cuyahoga County Workforce Investment Board and the Alcoa Foundation.

What's in Your Bag?

Your CIRI representative will be contacting you very soon. When they do, make sure you make time to see what they have for you. There will be an array of useful resources to accomplish a variety of goals in your business. For example, several companies that CIRI connected to Employment Connection were able to secure Project HIRE training dollars for previously unemployed workers. These grants of on-the-job training grants were more than $115,000. For companies that are looking to expand their customer base to increase sales we worked with the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) in Lake County to provide a hands-on workshop to help companies register to do business with the Federal government. Companies learned the process of bidding government contracts and how lucrative Federal contracting can be given that the Federal government is such a large consumer.

These resources and more will be delivered in a bag made from 75% recycled cotton and 25% recycled plastic bottles right here in Cleveland by Cleveland Canvas Goods Manufacturing Co. With a mission to sustain manufacturing in Cleveland we chose a local company to produce the recycled bag. We previously visited Cleveland Canvas Goods in 2008 and became aware of their capability. When you see your CIRI representative make sure you find out about the resources to sustain your business and get a bag while you're at it. Use it with pride, it was made in Cleveland.
