WIRE-Net's AIM Camp Injects New Students
Into Manufacturing Career Pathways

AIM Camp 2010 Race

Students, start your engines...
or, at least, let's race!

July 1st wasn't exactly a NASCAR-sanctioned event, but WIRE-Net's AIM Camp students put their cars through their paces during the celebration event wrapping up AIM Camp 2010. Over the three-week camp, students spent time in computer labs developing prototype designs and decals for their car body and time in the machine shop honing their chassis for maximum speed and distance.

Jessica Walker, WIRE-Net's AIM Camp Coordinator raved about the caliber of students and their energy level during this year's camp. "These students came with great math skills and a genuine interest in learning about manufacturing." The camp bore this out with a 100% completion rate and a 99.5% attendance rate for the camp.

Student enrollment into high schools with technical education programs is one of our primary program benchmarks. This year's camp included 16 students enrolled at Max Hayes and another 16 enrolled at other campuses such as John Hay, MC2STEM, and SuccessTech. Other camp participants entered the program undecided about their high school choice and at least 4 of those students took advantage of an opportunity to apply for enrollment at Max Hayes.

"I learned that there are
many different fields
in manufacturing"

Many students came away from the camp with a much different opinion of manufacturing. One student expressed that their view changed because "I learned that there are many different fields in manufacturing," and would consider going to school to learn more about manufacturing "because it seems interesting."

This program is made possible with the generous support of U.S. Department of Labor MAGICC grant to the Cleveland/Cuyahoga County Workforce Investment Board and the Alcoa Foundation.

Northeast Ohio Advanced Energy Special Improvement District
Financing Mechanism for Renewable Energy

The First Suburbs Development Council (FSDC) has partnered with the City of Cleveland in a first-of-its-kind endeavor to make solar PV and solar thermal installations affordable. The collaboration will establish an Advanced Energy Special Improvement District (AE-SID), a new financing mechanism that allows property owners to voluntarily finance the costs of an energy improvement project through their property taxes, thereby eliminating the chief barrier to clean energy installations: the large upfront cost.

An AE-SID is a mechanism which allows property owners in participating communities to finance the cost of installing and operating energy efficiency systems (including solar, geothermal, wind and other technologies) and allow the cost to be repaid over 30 years through a special voluntary assessment tax on their property tax bill. There will be no cost to property owners who do not participate in the program.

"It's an opportunity for our businesses to save money, and become more energy efficient," said Nathan Kelly, the President of the First Suburbs Development Council and the City of Lakewood's Director of Planning and Development.

Is Anti-Virus Software REALLY That Important?

AIM Plant Tour

As a computer user you've probably come across terms like viruses, spam, Trojan horses, worms, etc. But the questions is always, "Do I REALLY need anti-virus software?" The fact is anti-virus software has become a must-have tool for many computer users and sooner or later you WILL receive an email that contains a computer virus. Unfortunately, that's not the only method of infection. The virus and malware writers are now taking it upon themselves to take over reputable sites and install viruses, worms, and Trojans on these otherwise reputable sites most often completely without the site's owners ever knowing it has happened.

A few key things you can do include:

  1. No ADMIN privileges. Try to run as many users on limited user accounts as you can (not always possible). It won't stop all infections, but it does make a difference - probably 80% reduced infection rate.
  2. Patch aggressively. The key exploit areas right now are PDF and Flash, then Windows/IE. BEFORE surfing the web, make sure you are fully patched. ...
  3. Educate your users. The vast majority of infections these days are caused by social engineering. A user will get a funny video link on Facebook or some other social networking site, click on it, and it will say that they need to "install a special codec" or "update Flash." ...

TO THE MAX
Designing a 21st Century Career Tech High School

Program Update

After six months of dedicated effort facilitated by national consulting experts, WIRE-Net will deliver to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District a plan to redesign Max Hayes Career Tech High School. Big Picture Learning and Concordia, LLC have drafted a comprehensive plan that provides recommendations that can be implemented immediately to prepare for the design and new construction of a state-of-the-art facility. The New Max Hayes will open in 2013 with new program and curriculum designs relevant to students and the employer community. The transformation of how we prepare students for learning, work, and higher education will start in the 2011 school year.

This plan reflects the work of many student and faculty volunteers and individuals representing the manufacturing, construction, transportation, information technology, higher education, and social service sectors who shared their ideas and needs and conducted site visits to best practice career tech high schools in Ohio and across the country to create the principles on which education at the New Max Hayes will be based.

WIRE-Net will share the final plan and action steps before the start of the 2011 school year. WIRE-Net has been the corporate partner at Max Hayes since 1992 and is proud to continue its work with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, its partners, and community employers to shape the workforce of the future.
